Favorite family Halloween Movies | Maryland Family Photographer

It’s Halloween week! No matter how cheesy they are, holiday-themed movies are beloved by many. There’s just something about the family snuggling in close under your favorite blanket and sharing a huge bowl of popcorn. The cozy feeling can’t be beat. Movies create magic and make you believe.

This year my kids are going as a Skeleton and Tinkerbell. Getting into the Halloween spirit, I love to create a little magic of my own with their Halloween images. Since this is the first year my oldest is dressing as something ‘scary’, I added a little creepiness to his image. I had fun with the dark and moody edit. Tinkerbell is a magic maker, so we just had to believe and add a little fairy dust to make a few things fly!

Part of Halloween is watching fun, family-friendly Halloween films. I had fun pulling this list together and i hope some of these bring back memories for you from when you were a kid. I’m looking forward to checking off more on this list as the season continues and as the kids grow up.

Here are some of our favorite family Halloween movies we recommend for the kids (because not everyone is into 31 days of gruesome horror flicks):

1. Hocus Pocus – This is a classic…and a favorite. These three out-of-touch witches make everyone laugh (one of Sarah Jessica Parker’s debut movies), and you’ll find yourself cheering on the adorable brother-sister duo in their quest to end a magic spell.

2. Nightmare Before Christmas – Enjoy the mesmerizing misadventures of Jack Skellington as he plots to bring Christmas to Halloweentown.

3. Monster House – This is a good one for older-elementary-aged kids looking for a little horror and fright as this monster house comes to life and tries to gobble up unsuspecting trick-or-treaters.

4. Hotel Transylvania – What happens when a human crashes a huge monster birthday bash for a special “young” vampire at a fancy hotel? Find out in this silly film featuring Selena Gomez and Adam Sandler.

5. Goosebumps – This one will take you back to the 90s. Introduce the creepy tales from the famous Goosebumpsbook series to your kids through this freaky flick.

6. The Haunted Mansion – Eddie Murphy. Family Vacation. Haunted Mansion. Need we say more?

7. Charlie Brown & The Great Pumpkin – You can’t let Halloween go by without watching this heartwarming classic. (How sad would it be if our kids had never experienced Charlie Brown?!)

8. Frankenweenie – Another ghoulish Tim Burton film, but this one features and adorable monster pup!

9. The Corpse Bride – Can you tell we love Tim Burton films? But what better time to enjoy his bizarrely creative – and somehow endearing – movies. Creepy and weirdly lovable at the same time…

10. Halloweentown Series – Going back to the 90s again. That decade had the best Halloween movies – or really all genres of movies. I bet you remember this quirky grandmother who introduces her grandkids to a whole new monsterrific world…and I bet your kids will love these movies just as much as you did.
