Donuts for the Birthday Girl! | Maryland Cake Smash Photography

Have I told you how much I love the trending donut theme for first birthdays and baby photoshoots? It’s just the cutest thing! I was so excited when Mom said she wanted donuts as her first birthday girl’s theme. We loved putting together this donut themed cake smash for this very special one year old.

This sweet girl is quite the princess, so she needed a glamorous photoshoot to match. Mom wanted her little girl to be the focal point of the session, so we kept it fairly simple with a colorful pastel confetti backdrop, a few balloons, and a little cake (with donuts!) set out before her. I love bringing in a theme, without making it overdone, and still letting the baby shine as the star of the show!

After we got some pre-cake portraits of her in one of our studio client closet outfits, she eagerly made her way over to the pink frosted cake topped with two donuts. She excitedly took a bite from a donut. And then another. And another. She loved the donuts so much that she cried when we tried to take them away. This girl was not interested in the cake at all. She only wanted those tasty donuts! She finally poked around the cake some, but she had an even better time trying to feed it to grandma – so sweet!

After digging in, it was time for a bath. She was a little hesitant at first when she saw the tiny tub meant just for her, but after getting in, she splished and splashed until she was all clean and it was time to get out.

First birthdays are such a fun stage to capture. After twelve months of observing and learning, little ones are ready to get up and move. They may be hard to photograph as they crawl, scoot, and cruise all over the studio, but it sure makes for some adorable and priceless photos parents will cherish forever. These are the kinds of photos that hang around long enough to make it into a presentation at a graduation party or their wedding years from now, which is sure to bring up sweet memories and lots of laughs.
